The difference between side and front lighting is that light from the side means that the light is produced from a source that is on the left or right of the intended subject of the photograph while having light from a front angle means that it is aimed directly at the subject from a source aiming towards the its front.
Side lighting can be used to produce a particular quality to a photograph so it can be used for effect, for example it can be used to create a create a long shadow that in a sense can produce a feeling that the subject is sinister due to this shadow. Another way in which an evil character can be portrayed by side lighting is by making a shadow on only half of the models face as if to imply he has another personality, that yes he may seem friendly but in reality he is actually a sinister character.
