Blog Week 4

Last week, I finally got the images required to create my double page spread comic strip that I had planned, I took much time into using the quick select tool etc. to cut out the images of my characters and props and then place them onto another background. Monday was spent further working on the design of my front cover in terms of the text I was to use etc. while Tuesday was the day of which my photographs were taken therefore was spent uploading the images and choosing  which ones I would like to use and keep. The days after this were spent manipulating this images to create the comic, so resizing them etc.

Weekly Blog

Weekly Blog 2
Last week I completed the vast majority of my pre production work, this being such documents as the lighting that I will use during my studio shot. This was done throughout my lessons but also some work being completed outside, although nothing physically went wrong, I found it difficult to visualise the studio lighting that I will use, the way I overcome this problem was by creating quick sketches so that I had a more developed image of how the shot would look like.
Last week I did little in the means of creating my actual production, the main goal for last week was to put myself in a position where I can start my production this week without having any hindrances to worry about so that it will be completely smooth. This consisted of not only working out what lighting set up I will implement but also what font I use will, this I had actually done. I used the internet to download a particular font that I shall use within my production.

Shutter Speeds

Shutter Speeds
Shutter speed refers to the length of time it a camera’s shutter is open. The result of this act is the amount of light that reaches the sensor.  A photographer will be very concerned with the shutter speed due to its large role in the product that the camera will create, therefore it is very important to know what shutter speed is and be able to control its effects to an advantage.  When setting the camera to a long shutter time, this means that the camera has more to ‘absorb’ the light present within its view. By photographing a still environment, the photograph would be much more colourful when using a slow shutter speed as the camera would be able to absorb all of the colours present. When taking an image that is moving with a slow shutter speed, a motion blur is formed this is due to the camera capturing the moving object in motion and absorbing colours from its previous positions. When using a fast shutter speed this does not occur as the camera shutter absorbs the light and closes practically immediately so you do not receive the blurred effect therefore this in the photographer’s knowledge it can be used to the photographers advantage to further amplify the meaning of the photograph he/she intends to produce.
My target for producing pictures next time is to make sure I am certain of the type of feeling(s) I want to project to my audience and then make sure my shutter speed mirrors this. By doing so I will produce a photograph that will be more effective towards my intended audience, so for example I may want to take a photograph for a classic car moving, for a magazine for enthusiasts, I would use a fast shutter speed so I do not get a motion blur as this is what the audience would want.

Lighting from a side and front angle

The difference between side and front lighting is that light from the side means that the light is produced from a source that is on the left or right of the intended subject of the photograph while having light from a front angle means that it is aimed directly at the subject from a source aiming towards the its front.
Side lighting can be used to produce a particular quality to a photograph so it can be used for effect, for example it can be used to create a create a long shadow that in a sense can produce a feeling that the subject is sinister due to this shadow.  Another way in which an evil character can be portrayed by side lighting is by making a shadow on only half of the models face as if to imply he has another personality, that yes he may seem friendly but in reality he is actually a sinister character.

Magazine Mock Ups

Write Up for Front Cover
Although the photograph itself took some rather major changes throughout the course of my final design I did frame in knowledge that I would need space to insert sell lines and a title etc. therefore I placed the subject of my photograph or rather the model at the bottom right of the original photograph to leave room. I had some trouble ordering the model as it took some patience in getting it so that his leg was in mid air when the photograph was taken. I directing this matter of timing by counting downing from three also in contention with the camera on a tripod and I kept my finger half down on the trigger so that the camera was already in focus. I also used a quick shutter speed so I did not any motion blur. Due to it being a location shot, I couldn’t use lighting therefore I had to rely on the natural light, unfortunately the weather wasn’t great therefore I had to compensate by removing the background from the subject then adding lighting effects using Photoshop. For the settings for the camera I attempted to make sure that the lens focus and iso was all on the model as to blur out the background due to the bad weather.
In Photoshop I used gridlines as to centralise my image better in the page and avoid the sometimes inevitable cropping of the page during printing. In the design I downloaded a font, as to give my design a more personal feel and to cater for it better than the default fonts available. I chose the font style I did as it caters towards my young target audience and gives off a feeling of rebellion and breaking free from the mould. Within designing this front cover I did implement a few new tools, for example, the quick selection tool that I used by selecting the background by dragging and clicking the mouse then deleting it thus easily removing the background of my image. I used the desaturate tool of which I have used before although after it I used the photo filter feature that allowed me overlay I colour right over my image. The colour scheme I used was fairly basic, too keep to it I desaturated all my images then added the same colour photo filter onto them, then add a white stroke. I cropped my image to remove the background as I only wanted the subject of the photograph and therefore this left the background inadequate.  The text alignment I used was very basic as I left all the text on a  left orientation this is so I could separate the image and the text so that they seemed more in proportion to the size of the page. The barcode that I imported I simply copied and pasted from a internet browser then placed it into my design as a new layer.
The language that I have used I have attempted to use aspiration, as in to motivate the reader into doing something. I have done this as by using anecdotes’ such as reach for the sky. The connotation of my image is really basic in nature. I made the tree larger yet the model smaller then with the title stating reach for the sky this gives the reader the impression that although this person is much smaller than its opponent he is still attempting to climb it as seen through his stance.

Advantages and Disadvantages Table

What equipment have you used over the past year?
Advantages
Disadvantages
What did I create with it? What features did I use?
How effectively did I use it?
Adobe Photoshop
This software allowed me to easily manipulate my images, with such features as the clone tool that I may use to fix a problem or use a filter to achieve a certain effect etc. It also allows me to make photographs look better in general by manipulating the contrast and levels of the image. The photograph can also be resized and parts removed using such features as the crop or lasso tool.
Photoshop is designed to manipulate images, so therefore doesn’t respond well to large amount of text, which in some cases can lose quality. Some may argue that Photoshop can be complicated, especially to the beginner as in some cases it is rather complex.
I used Photoshop for the vast majority of my productions. By using such software for all my images I used a large amount of its features. For my very first piece, i implemented the magic wand tool as to remove the background of the image, then by changing the arrangement of the layers and pasting in a new image, I created a new background. To create the background I copied one image and created a montage using free transform. Before the photograph was placed in this document I also manipulate the levels to improve the overall the appearance of the photograph. In my final piece I used the more advanced capabilities for Photoshop, I used the quick selection tool to remove backgrounds and also I used a number of filters
In Design
In Design is much better at designing magazine articles than Photoshop. Although it likes many of Photoshop’s image manipulating tools it has such features as text box control which allows better control of large quantities of text thus making it easier to place large articles.
Indesign can be rather complicated to use at first due to its professional nature and capabilities. When regarding images this software lacks many manipulation techniques in comparison to Photoshop etc. This therefore can lead to having to export images to and from the two pieces of software which can become inconvenient and time consuming.
I only used InDesign for my last project of which I used it to create my double page spread. The reason for this was that I could implement its advantages of text features that Photoshop lacks thus making it easier to place my article. It also is more efficient in placing different variations of data so it was easier to place my layout.

Canon E350D Camera

This camera has features that will allow the photograph to produce a better photographs in that what his/hers goals are. Some examples of these include: shutter speed settings which can determine the amount of light in an image etc. An aperture setting which allows the photograph to focus more on a particular area by using focus. The camera can be used on continuous fast shots which can be useful when needing to take photographs in quick contention. The camera has a lens that can suit many different locations and shots making it dynamic. The overall quality of the camera is high in that it has a setting that will allow photographs to be taken at 8 megapixel, that will print the photograph out on A4 at a quality of 300dpi.
Although it is good for studio settings, it is rather immobile due to its weight and size also due to its value large caution must be taken in location shots.

There are better performing cameras available such as the SLR’s that have a lower F stop setting which makes these cameras better in a dark environment and in shots that a low depth shot is needed.

Other camera’s available have a higher quantity of megapixels to their disposal. Professional photographs would use  a min. Of 12 megapixels to ensure that good image quality would be maintained even at A3 size.
I used this camera to take all of my photographs that I have used without the course, therefore I have used it in many different locations and used many of its features. One main feature I used was its dynamic lens which played a part in every photograph just as rule although in some shots some more advanced features where used such as the shutter speed as to manipulate the light in the photograph. I also used the different automatic settings that determined the aperture of the photograph in terms of depth of focus. I’d like to think I used this camera very effectively as in every shoot I attempted to use its different features as to test which ones would create the best image.
800 watt Arrilite redheadsx2 continuous lighting

This lighting allows you to see how its light will affect the subjects of the shot.
These are much simpler to use than flash lighting kits as they do not need to be metered.
Easy to set up in the studio.
This lighting allows spot and flood settings.
This lighting technique can coat the photograph in a red orange hue that needs to be removed by setting the camera to the appropriate white balance mode or by using the colour correction feature in Photoshop.
This lighting can excrement large amounts of heat that can be uncomfortable for models and even damage subjects.
Not necessarily professional as generally a flash lighting kit would be used.
Many of my shots were taken upon location, therefore I didn’t have much time to.
Bowens softbox and flash lighting equipment

This lighting method does not coat the photograph in a red/orange hue like continuous lighting.
Can be rather cold as in some cases the heat off the continous lighting helps models perform.
What method of lighting professionals would use.
Allows better control of levels of light than its continous lighting.
Filters and gels can be used to manipulate the image for example illuminate the background.
Honeycombs can be used to further control the light on the subject in the model
Use of a flash meter is needed for this method of lighting to work.
Can be difficult to set up for beginners due to its professional nature.
Can be time consuming for even professionals and if a mistake occurs it can deter the quality of the final image to a tremendous proportion.

Lastolite paper backdrops

These backdrops do not crease therefore you get a better background to your image in terms of quality and professional nature.  They are also disposable so they can be drawn on etc. If desired to.
Is easy to set up and is available in various colours to suit your desires.
Can become expensive as it needs to be replaced on a regular basis.
Dependent on the colour and nature of the studio, it can become dirty, especially if white and can be torn rather easily due to its thin material.
Rather large in its stature so it is hard to mobilise if not many people are on hand to help.

Silk Tripod
This equipment is extremely useful as it can be used to stabilise, tilt, pan the camera and make sure that it does not shake.
the tripod is very mobile as it can be folded in on itself and made smaller in its size so it can be carried on location.
If this equipment is not unfolded properly and the camera placed incorrectly, shots could go wrong due to too much tilt etc.
They can be expensive to be depending on its features although many of them are rather easy to brake.

Downloaded Fonts

These are examples of fonts of which I have downloaded using an internet browser. I have attempted to use such fonts that could be used in different situations as so I  could recieve a feeling of there characteristics and actual looks once placed into a document. I also learnt how well they respond to Photoshops features such as gradients and bevel and emboss.

Product Evaluation
The images that I used within my final piece were used to imitate that of retro comic books. The meaning that I attempted to amplify by using these images was that not only to take a more humorous approach to my point but also that it I could use it as a format to produce my final piece in such a way that it radiated different meanings in that due to the comic book hero it is as if the audience needs to become a hero etc. so therefore by using this theme I attempted to make global warming more easier to absorb for my target audience. All of my images were taken within a controlled studio the location of which my camera did not change, partly because this was needed for me to create a realistic comic strip as I needed the depth perception to stay the same. For my other images I again never moved the camera but rather set the lens to different distances as to produce a better photograph in terms of fitting the whole subject in etc. The costume I used can be connotated as the theme I aimed for. The globe I used could be associated with global warming. The colours I used resemble a comic book, they represent the earth but also alarming due to its red aspects. I created my sell lines in the hope that with a mix of my colour palette already used they would stand out which in my opinion was successful, once again complying with the preferences of my audience. The one teaser that I used I positioned as a Skyline. I did these to catch the reader’s attention better and then get them more interested in the entirety of my work by making this teaser humorous to my target audience; I also used a high contrasting colour to make this stand out from the page more. In some cases I have used narrative voice, this reason for this is can be found in the theme that I used, as previously stated I wanted to replicate a comic book therefore using narrative voice would increase the realism of my work but also I think that it further adds to the humour that I have attempted to include within my work, for example the speech bubbles I have used in my comic strip gives my work a more quirky tone. In terms of layout my work is rather standard. I have again attempted to replicate a comic book as much as possible. I have kept my front cover with little free space although there is not much text therefore making it more interesting to my audience and therefore better comply with their requirements as an audience. The language have used is again comic themed, as to relate to the rest of my work. My article at first features language that contains slang of a high density, I have attempted to start off with heavy slang but then later in my article slowly start to place more formal language, this is like a pull the reader in method as to get them interested at first then get them to read on even though it has took a more serious tone. In the language I have tried to somewhat mimic comic language but also in some respects mock it by over exaggerating although I did this to add to the humour and for the reader not to take it as though it is a formal advertisement. The font that I used again like the rest of my work resembled font used in comic books, which just so happens to be aimed at a similar audience therefore it’s informal, distort etc. the colours that tried to use for the majority of my work are blue red and green. Blue and green because they are associated with the Earth/Global Warming then red as it creates a sharp contrast. These three are also close to be the three primary colours therefore can be considered rather basic and easier for my audience to interpret. In general I have used a large amount of images within my work, I have done this as I believe that my target audience will respond better to relevant images rather than large amounts of text, so really a case of keeping the reader interested, so I’ve attempted to write a small article then compensate with a large density images. I have used only one quote within my work, of which I used so that the reader can spot it before reading the article, therefore getting more interested into reading the rest of my article, I have extravagated this quote by colouring it red and putting a black stroke on so that it stands out more, catching the readers eye. On the majority of my images I have used a drop shadow, by doing so I have added depth to my work and brought it more out the page rather than it looking ‘flat’. The language I have used within my article begins very informal; using a large amount of slang etc. then as the article progresses I begin to use more formal language. By doing so it pulls the reader in to reading the first section of the article, getting the reader interested therefore giving them a desire to read on of which by this I then begin to use more serious language. I think that this is successful as it complies with my target audience in that it pulls them into a more formal article that they otherwise may not have read due to formal language that may have put them off.
I think that in general my work does look professional to a particular degree although does lack finesse in certain areas that could have possibly been improved. The main thing to consider is that it may look like a professional comic book although may requirement was for it too be a magazine, a professional may have added more magazine elements into the my final piece rather than be purely comic themed like my design is.
To some degree my work does have some emotional impact. Especially within the article as throughout my final piece it doesn’t give the impression of seriousness , then when further into the article it does become more serious, and portrays an sense that only it can be joked about this magazine does have an underlying point that is to be addressed. So my magazine has a hard hitting realization within my article.
My idea as previously stated many times was to have a comic based theme. I attempted to make my images look like comic characters as seen in my front cover, personally I think that the manipulation of these images could have been better and looked more like a comic but after many failed attempts I used my best output.
After consulting my target audience it would seem that the layout of my design it what most bothers them, an example of this is the positioning of my barcode the middle right of my work rather than the generic positioning being at the bottom of the page on the right.  Some have claimed that I have implemented a generation trigger within design, due to my choice of theme.
The theme that I chose definitely caters to my audience due to its fun nature etc. and this is what I attempted to aim for. During my pre production stage I came to a realisation that humour is a key factor within my target audience in that it could be used to great advantage if implemented properly. To make my design more appealing to my audience is using  a female character, although my theme generally features male characters, my target audience is multi gender therefore it would seem a good idea to use a female character as it would then become more personal and seem more tailored to my female audience.
If I could start my project again I think that I would maintain the theme that I used although done it to a high standard overall. Although I’m happy with all the text I used, I think that the images could have been improved in terms of costume, location but possibly most of all how I manipulated these images too looks like comics could be improved. My comic strip could have also featured a more in depth story that was shot on location opposed to a studio to make it more realistic and more personal to the reader.
